ARTIST STATEMENT

In 2007 I started studying mosaic art at the art school “Artenreich” in Graue, Germany. More and more I experienced the manifold ways of complex expression by making mosaics. I have felt a coming together: a coalescing of my former artistic training, my interest in traditional crafts and architectural expressions, as well as my love to combine various materials and to work with colors of brilliance and unique depth. I discovered the great historical Byzantine and Roman mosaic art at the historical places in Italy, the traditional craft style of mosaic-making in Germany and I am fascinated by the modernism style of architect A. Gaudi (recently I was able to admire his work in Barcelona). I am inspired and influenced by the art of Niki de Saint Phalle and Friedensreich Hundertwasser, too.

I have worked on small and large scaled, one and two dimensional art pieces. The major effects of my art are: narrative, symbolic, and decorative - vibrant, eye catching, and textured. My themes are: expressing emotions and own experiences of life, glancing at unexpected perspectives. The beautification of our environment is a recurring theme in my art work. Broken ceramic tiles, vitreous glass, stone, crackle glass, marble, shells, “tesserae”, and precious stones are the materials I mainly use for my work - 100s to 1000s of individual pieces meticulously laid together to form an image.

I have private commissions (decorating a bathroom and a kitchen wall which met with the client’s approval) and I produce non-commission art pieces.
