Mosaic Art Workshop with seniors

Seniors are creating a mosaic wall hanging

PROJECT DESCRIBTION

Ten to twelve seniors will work together with staff, volunteers and the art teacher on the mosaic project once a week over an eight week period of time – approx. 2 hours each session. At the end the mosaic will decorate the facility. Will it be a huge and colorful butterfly, flowers on a meadow, a triptych picturing a wonderful landscape, a frame for a big mirror, a sculpture or something totally different…?  We will see.

Workshop Schedule

1st day: The participants will get information about mosaic traditions. By making mosaic art today, we employ many of the same techniques, tools and methods used by ancient mosaic artists. We will evaluate the place where the finished mosaic will hang. We will speak about the theme, start designing the motif and choose the appropriate colors.

2nd to 5th day: We will create the mosaic using broken ceramic tiles, broken pieces of porcelain, found objects and Italian smalti. We will break and cut mosaic stones and tiles in much the same way they were generations ago, using hammer, chisels and nipper. No special knowledge or great strength is needed.

6th and 7th day: We will “clue“ the mosaic with mortar on a prepared slab of wood and after drying we will grout our art work.

Last day: All artists will sign the mosaic and we will hang it and celebrate.

Field trip

Arranging a field trip with the participants can be inspiring and enriching, i.e. visiting a gallery or a museum where mosaics are exhibited or viewing mosaic sculptures at public places in the city. I would love to arrange a conversation with other mosaic artists in your city too.

HOW THE SENIORS BENEFIT BY PARTICIPATING

The participating seniors benefit in various aspects by

Ø       activating their own abilities and skills and learning new artistic techniques,

Ø       being active, producing something together and creating an impressive art work to beautify the facility or the environment,

Ø       alternating daily routine, experiencing something new, and exchanging ideas and

Ø       getting public recognition and appreciation as well as taking pride.

And not to forget: taking part in the workshop will be fun and bring happiness!

The mosaic workshop attracts women as well as men. During the workshop the combination of tension and relief creates an atmosphere of tranquility and concentration, as well as many reasons to laugh. Technical skills are not necessary. The methods are adjusted to the abilities of the participants.

THE ORGANISATION BENEFITS TOO

The organization that hosts the workshop benefits as well:

Ø       The facility will be enriched with an art work produced by the residents. The celebration at the end of the workshop can be an effective publicity event,

Ø       the range of events the organization’s offers will be increased with this innovative and sustainable mosaic project and

Ø       the organization’s self-image and how others perceive the organization will be enhanced.

A special craft room is not necessary: the workshop can be arranged nearly everywhere. Participating volunteers will enhance their skills.

FELTING and NUNO TECHNIQUE

Wet Felting: wool becomes felt when it is subjected to moisture, heat and pressure. The materials we use are colorfull sheep wool fibres, soap and water.

Nuno Technique: a method similar to felting. We combine woll fibres with woven materials such as silk or muslin. By embedding the dyed wool fibres into the fabric we create a material which is lightweight and flexible.

Easily participants create all kinds of wearables (hats, vests, neck or calf wrist wraps), toys, jewelry, purses, bags, wall hangings, pillows, and more - here are few examples of felted necklaces - please check also photos of felting examples at: ART PIECES - Wool & Silk
